Science on Saturday

Please join us for Science on Saturday, a fun and exciting program for both students and adults. Experience “Thinking and Acting Like a Scientist.” Adults fully participate in all program activities.

1st and 2nd Grade Sessions:

Sensing the World Around You
Use your senses and scientific tools to solve a mystery! And make careful observations of organisms living at the Van Andel Education Institute. Students will learn how to handle sense-ational animals… and can even take one of the organisms home (if they wish). Adults fully participate in program activities.

Blow the House Down!
“I’ll huff, and I’ll puff, and I’ll blow your house DOWN.”  Inspired by the story of the Three Little Pigs, learn to think and act like engineers to design and construct earthquake-resistant houses that can withstand the big bad wolf’s huffing and puffing. We’ll put the houses to the test and vote on the most successful design! Adults fully participate in program activities.

3rd and 4th Grade Sessions:

Orion’s Splash Down!
Spacecrafts encounter mind-blowing speed and intense heat as they re-enter Earth’s atmosphere. Think and act like an engineer to design a waterproof capsule that will protect astronauts during splashdown using every day materials. Adults fully participate in program activities

November 16, 2019 | Morning Session 9:00–11:00 AM | Register Now

Exploring Species Survival
See, touch, and investigate a variety of amazing animals—including insects and bearded dragons—to discover what they need to survive. Think and act like a scientist to make a model habitat to take home. Adults fully participate in program activities.

5th and 6th Grade Sessions:

Light’s Out!
Oh no—a storm has knocked out power in the entire city! Learn how to connect a battery to a light bulb using wires to make it light. Think and act like an engineer to design and build a flashlight within given criteria and constraints before night falls. Adults fully participate in program activities.

December 20, 2019 | Morning Session 9:00–11:30 AM | Register Now

What’s for Dinner?
Investigate energy flow through a food web by observing the eating preferences of organisms. Think and act like a scientist to design and build a complete food chain that would survive and thrive. Construct a self-containing aquatic ecosystem complete with organisms to take home. Adults fully participate in program activities.
