Van Andel Education Institute seeks and admits students to the Afterschool Cohort who are curious, creative and enjoy working with others. The Afterschool Cohort inspires groups of students to think and act like scientists and engineers over the course of one semester. Through hands on investigations, they ask questions, investigate and discover the answers using scientific tools and resources.
Participating students must make a commitment to attend the Afterschool Cohort for the duration of the semester they enroll in. Participation in the program is secured on a first come, first served basis.There is no cost for participation in this program. Tuition is underwritten by Van Andel Institute.

Who: Students enrolled in 5th and 6th grade in Spring 2019

When: Tuesday, January 15 – Thursday, April 25, 2019, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Do you know how the many different types of ecosystems are important to our health? Design your own investigations using living animals and plants to learn how ecosystems work and why they matter. Build a living ecosystem and study the organisms within. Visit local sites to learn about ways in which humans have impacted ecosystems, and use your own engineering skills to design solutions to local and global challenges.

2019 Spring 5th & 6th Grade Afterschool Cohort Application Process
September–October → Registration applications must be received by Wednesday, October 31, 2018.
November → Eligible participants will be contacted and asked to commit to attend the 6th Grade Afterschool Cohort for the duration of the 2019 Spring term for one semester.
December → Accepted participants attend 2019 Spring 5th & 6th Grade Afterschool Cohort orientation.
